Who performs the landscaping work?
Mulch Indy performs the landscaping work in Indianapolis. Our three primary services are Mulch Installation, Weeding & Bed Refresh, and Full Landscaping Reset. Your estimate request goes directly to the team doing the work, not to a provider-matching service.
What does a professional mulching service include?
Mulch Indy does the spreading in your landscape beds. Before work starts, we confirm the beds, material supply, depth, preparation, cleanup, and timing included in your job. Weeding, edging, and old-mulch removal are discussed as needed, not included by default.
Do I need bed measurements before requesting an estimate?
Send your service address and contact preferences using the estimate form. Measurements can help if you have them, but the calculator is optional and a request is not a confirmed booking.
Can Mulch Indy take my project outside Indianapolis?
For a nearby community, include your exact service address so Mulch Indy can confirm coverage for the job. Community planning pages do not guarantee coverage or availability at every address.
What happens after I request a landscaping estimate?
Your request goes directly to Mulch Indy. We contact you using your preferred method to discuss your beds, address coverage, estimate, and included work. You decide whether to proceed after discussing those details; submitting a request does not book the job.
Can you refresh mulch that is already in place?
Yes. Mulch Installation includes discussing faded or patchy existing beds. We consider the existing layer and the finish you want before agreeing what to add, loosen, or remove. Material supply and preparation are confirmed in your estimate.
Does Weeding & Bed Refresh automatically include new mulch?
Tell us whether you want fresh mulch as part of the refresh. We discuss the weeds, existing bed condition, preparation, material supply, and cleanup, then confirm what is included in your estimate. New mulch and edging are not bundled by default.
How is a Full Landscaping Reset different from a bed refresh?
Weeding & Bed Refresh focuses on tidying the beds you already have. A Full Landscaping Reset works through broader changes together, including plants and rock or mulch choices. We confirm the preparation, materials, planting, cleanup, and other included work for your particular project before work begins.
Is it worth hiring someone to spread mulch?
Compare quantity, access, preparation, and physical work with the time and equipment you have. Slopes, narrow gates, and separate beds can make spreading more involved. Use the calculator for a planning quantity, then ask Mulch Indy for an installation estimate.
Mulch Basics
What does mulch actually do for my landscape?
A 2–3 inch layer holds soil moisture through hot Indiana summers, blocks most annual weeds, and buffers roots against the freeze-thaw swings central Indiana is known for. Organic mulches also break down into the heavy clay soil common around Indianapolis, slowly improving its structure. Compare options in the materials guide.
What is the difference between mulch and compost?
Compost is a soil amendment you mix into the ground to feed it; mulch is a protective layer you spread on top. They work well together: an inch of compost worked into the bed, then 2–3 inches of mulch over the surface. Using compost as a top layer invites weeds ... keep the jobs separate.
How long does mulch last before it needs replacing?
Shredded hardwood thins as it decomposes, and color retention varies with the material and exposure. Inspect existing depth and bed condition before adding anything. For a fresh finish, discuss Mulch Installation with Mulch Indy; a seasonal top-up is not always needed.
Is dyed mulch safe for pets, kids, and plants?
The dyes themselves are usually carbon or iron oxide based and considered safe. The real question is the wood underneath: cheap dyed product is sometimes ground from recycled pallets or construction scrap, which can contain treated lumber. Choosing a Material
What is the best mulch for Indianapolis yards?
Shredded hardwood is the Midwest workhorse: the strands knit together so it stays put on slopes and through storms, and it decomposes into clay soil instead of just sitting on it. Cedar earns its premium near entries and foundations. When in doubt, shredded hardwood is the safe call.
What is the cheapest way to mulch large areas?
Arborist wood chips are the budget king ... tree services often deliver them free or nearly free just to avoid dump fees. They are coarser than yard-bought mulch, so most homeowners use them for paths and back borders, and buy screened mulch for front beds. Straw is the cheap option for vegetable gardens.
Is cedar mulch worth the extra cost?
For high-visibility beds, usually yes. Cedar decomposes slower than hardwood, so it holds its texture and color longer, and its natural oils give it a pleasant scent that may deter some insects. For large back-of-property areas the premium rarely pays off ... use it where you see and smell it.
Should I use rubber mulch on a playground?
Choose surfacing using product-specific impact test documentation for the equipment's fall height. Rubber mulch can move or thin out, so inspect, maintain, and replenish it as its manufacturer specifies. It can get hot and does not improve planting-bed soil. What mulch is best for a vegetable garden?
Straw is the classic choice: light, cheap, easy to move at planting time, and it breaks down fast into the soil. Untreated grass clippings and shredded leaves also work. Skip dyed mulch and unknown wood sources around food crops ... more on the garden mulch page.

Where can I get free mulch in Indianapolis?
Tree services are the best source ... many will drop a full load of fresh wood chips at your driveway for free rather than pay to dump them. Some municipal yard-waste sites also offer free or low-cost mulch in season, though you usually haul it yourself. Prefer screened material? These yards allow customer pickup.
When is mulch cheapest to buy?
Compare current quotes rather than assuming a cheapest season. Check volume, material source, delivery charge, and minimum order with independent yards. For installed mulch, compare the full agreed work scope as well as material cost.
How Much to Order
How many yards of mulch does a typical Indianapolis home need?
Most suburban properties land between 2 and 4 cubic yards for front and back beds at the standard 3‑inch depth, while corner lots and heavily landscaped yards can run 6 or more. Measure each bed, then let the mulch calculator turn dimensions into exact yards and bag counts in seconds.
Should I order extra mulch just in case?
Add about 10% over your calculated total. Beds are never perfect rectangles, and a little extra covers settling, edges, and the odd bare spot, while leftovers keep fine in a corner pile for touch-ups. A small buffer is much cheaper than a second delivery fee for one missing wheelbarrow load.
Installation & Timing
Should I put landscape fabric under mulch?
Under organic mulch, no. Fabric blocks the decomposition that feeds your soil, and within a season or two weeds root in the mulch layer on top of it anyway. Save fabric for inorganic covers like gravel or rubber, where separation from the soil is the whole point.
Can I mulch too early in the spring?
Yes. Mulch insulates whatever state the soil is in, so piling it on cold, soggy March ground keeps beds cold and wet longer and can delay perennials. In central Indiana, wait until the soil has warmed and dried ... typically mid-April onward ... and weed the bed first.
Is it too late to mulch in summer or fall?
No. Mulch can help conserve moisture and suppress weeds when applied appropriately outside spring too. Check existing depth, clear weeds, and water as needed before spreading. Discuss the preparation and finish in your Mulch Installation estimate; a fall top-up is not automatically needed or included.
How do I mulch around trees without hurting them?
Build a flat donut, not a volcano: 2–3 inches deep, pulled back several inches from the trunk so the root flare stays visible, extending as wide as you are willing to go. Mulch piled against bark holds moisture on the trunk and invites rot and borers. See tree ring mulching for the full method.
Do I need to edge my beds before mulching?
A defined edge can help separate mulch from lawn and create a tidy finish. It is not automatically included in every installation. Describe the existing edge and ask Mulch Indy to confirm any edging work in the estimate.
Can I put mulch directly over weeds?
Pull or kill them first. Three inches of mulch will smother most annual weeds, but established perennials like thistle, bindweed, and quackgrass punch straight through and are harder to remove later. Ten minutes of weeding before you spread saves a season of frustration after.
Problems & Maintenance
What is the fungus growing in my mulch?
Mushrooms and the yellow blob nicknamed dog vomit slime mold are harmless decomposers ... rake them out if they bother you. The one to take seriously in the Midwest is artillery fungus, which shoots sticky black specks onto light siding and cars. Near the house, use bark, cedar, or stone instead of aged shredded wood, and refresh annually.
Does mulch attract termites?
Mulch does not attract termites from a distance ... the consistent moisture under any ground cover is what they like once nearby. Keep mulch about 6 inches off siding and foundations, maintain that visible inspection gap, and avoid burying weep holes or vents. Rubber and stone carry the same moisture caveat.
Why did my mulch fade so quickly?
Sun does it. Natural hardwood grays within a season, and bargain dyed product can fade in a couple of months, while quality dyed mulch holds about a year. A thin one-inch refresh restores color without piling depth past the healthy range.
Why does my new mulch smell like vinegar or ammonia?
That is sour mulch, created when a pile sits compacted and airless. The acids it releases can scorch tender plants within a day of spreading. If a load smells sharp rather than earthy, spread it thin somewhere safe to air out for a day or two first ... and buy from high-turnover yards to avoid it entirely.
Can too much mulch kill plants and trees?
Yes. Excess mulch can restrict air and water movement and keep trunks and crowns too wet. Start with 2–3 inches total in planting beds, including existing mulch, rather than adding that much every year. Coarse wood chips around established trees and shrubs on well-drained soil may suit 3–4 inches total; use a shallower layer near small plants or on wet, fine-textured soil. Fine shredded wood can mat, so start with 2–3 inches total and use the lower end in wet conditions. How do I keep mulch from washing away in heavy rain?
Use shredded mulch rather than nuggets on slopes and near downspouts ... the strands lock together while nuggets float and scatter. A defined edge with a slight trench lip catches runoff, and redirecting downspout discharge past the bed solves most repeat washouts.
