How the Math Works
Mulch is sold by volume, so the formula is simple ... area times depth, converted to cubic yards:
For irregular or curved beds, break the space into rough rectangles and circles, add them as separate beds above, and round up. Ordering a little extra beats a second delivery fee.

Bags vs Bulk

How much mulch do I need?
Multiply your bed area in square feet by the depth in feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. At the recommended 3‑inch depth, one cubic yard covers about 108 square feet. A typical 10 × 10 ft bed at 3 inches deep needs just under one cubic yard.
How deep should mulch be?
For many planting beds, a total 2–3 inch organic mulch layer is a planning starting point. Account for existing mulch and plant needs, and keep mulch back from trunks and stems. Playground surfacing depth must follow product-specific tested fall-height documentation; this landscape calculator is not a playground safety specification.
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it equals 13.5 standard 2 cu ft bags or 9 of the larger 3 cu ft bags.
Should I buy mulch in bags or in bulk?

How much does a cubic yard of mulch weigh?
Mulch weight varies with material and moisture. Ask the supplier for the loaded weight, then check your vehicle's rated payload after accounting for passengers, tools, and other cargo. Volume alone cannot determine a safe load.
How much mulch fits in a pickup truck?
Measure the truck bed for a volume estimate, but check rated payload and axle limits too. Subtract passengers and other cargo, confirm material weight with the supplier, and secure the load. Stay within the lower applicable limit. For DIY purchases, compare independent yards listing customer pickup.
How many square feet does a bag of mulch cover?
A standard 2 cu ft bag covers 12 sq ft at 2 inches deep, or 8 sq ft at the recommended 3 inches. The larger 3 cu ft bags cover 18 sq ft at 2 inches and 12 sq ft at 3 inches.
When is the best time to mulch in Indianapolis?

Do I need to remove old mulch before adding new?
Usually not. Rake and fluff the existing layer to break up crusting, then top up so the combined depth lands at 2–3 inches. Only strip old mulch if it is matted, moldy, or already piled 4+ inches deep.
